Parental Leave Payments Increase From 1 July 2013

The Parental Leave and Employment Protection (Rate of Parental Leave Payment) Regulations 2013 (SR 2013/233) increase parental leave payments from 1 July 2013 in line with changes in the average weekly wage.

The maximum amount available to eligible employees and the self-employed increases from $475.16 to $488.17 gross a week.

The minimum parental leave payment for self-employed persons increases from $135 to $137.50 gross a week.

Under the Parental Leave and Employment Protection Act 1987, parents eligible for the scheme are entitled to up to 14 weeks’ paid leave at a rate calculated on the basis of their average weekly earnings.

The Parental Leave and Employment Protection (Rate of Parental Leave Payment) Regulations were notified in the New Zealand Gazette on 30 May 2013.
